This simple reminder is dedicated to all Webmasters (and Webslaves like me). Don't sleep tonight without reading this. Find out why below… Have you seen people cried out loud for help because they lost their websites? I have seen this many times in several forums and have personally experienced the same not long ago. I am a living testimony on this one.And so I cried out, "Mama help! I lost my websites!”  But no one can help me… Sad but true… So I face mounting problems that escalates each day as I am rebuilding my websites. Lost sales, lost customers, lost files and lost hairs (it’s very stressful you know). If it did not happen to you just yet, good for you. Otherwise, you already know how painful it is to wake up in the morning just to see your website was wiped out on the face of the internet. Scary eh?Webmasters lose their websites for a variety of reasons. This may be due to either one or the combination of the following:

1) Server hardware breakdowns or failures
2) Datacenter disasters (fires, electrical, etc)
3) Software updates and failures
4) Hacking and malicious intents
5) Transfer or server movement problems
6) Your webhost human errors
7) Your own human errors
8) Other accidents I might have missed

Except for your own mistakes (admit it, nobody’s perfect) from time to time, all the other reasons are beyond your control. And it’s not good news. It's a good thing that you NOW know that it's not a question of "IF" it will happen to you. It's just a matter of "WHEN" disaster will strike YOU.  – Are you ready for this?  – Can you deal with the consequences and trauma? – Is your website insured if disaster falls today? Luckily, most of us know the solution but we keep on ignoring this. Admit it. I know.  The only way to really have peace of mind is to do one simple thing… Just ONE simple thing…  Backup!  Backup!  Backup! Most of us knew this all along but we don't do it.  Are we crazy? Nope. We are just busy.We are so busy online we don't have time for this simple thing. No challenge eh?  But you see, this is your ONLY true insurance from the shaky internet platforms and uncontrollable mishaps.

Setup Secure WordPress Blog in 1 step

WordPress blog security is not something most bloggers even consider when they start blogging to make money and yet it could be one of the most significant factors that will impact your success down the road.

Problems associated with a compromised or what is more knows as “hacked” blog are not limited to lost productivity and income that could be generated while that blog is down. There are a few more serious impacts to your overall business that unfortunately become obvious way too late.

Expert Consulting Expense. If your blog is a primary site and income generator you simply have to have it properly restored and operational and for most people it mean finding a professional willing to do it for you. I can tell you first hand, as security consultant that it can get very expensive in a very short time. Security related consulting fee tend to ramp up very rapidly and end up costing you dearly.

Search engines ban. Unknown to most of the people – search engines do ban sites that have been identified as hacked. Most of the time blog owner doesn't even know aboout the problem until someone choose to notify him directly. And it can cost you via lost revenues as instead of arriving onto your blog – searchers who clicked your link are presented with a warning that site is a known malware spreading site. Instead of new visitors you get lost opportunities.

Damaged reputation. If you blog is also used to represent you on the web – your reputation can be damaged in the eyes of potential customers just because your blog was defaced or what is even worth exploited and has malware on it. And when your potential customers pick up a malware from your blog, you can be sure they will spread the word!

Having a secure WordPress blog can be a simple 3 step process that properly implemented can mean a difference between blogging success and trashed reputation. Chose what fits your needs.

Personally, I have never, ever sent out any type of advertising email of any sort out of respect for others privacy. I figure if they want to find me and my sites, they can do that on search engines and directories or from the byline on the articles I write. But I have been plagued over the years by spam and spammers because of the past advertising I’ve placed on the web. That’s a no brainer for everyone that has a presence on the web. There are quite a few ways to fight it, but oft times it seems like a loosing battle.

Spam method number one and it’s cure:

Many of you have used auto submitters to advertise your site. Some of you probably made the mistake of using you main email address to submit it with. Some disreputable submission sites will harvest these emails and compile a list of suckers. Your email then is sold on that list to thousands of spammers. Big mistake.

If you have a website, most likely you have a way to create multiple email accounts. The best thing to do is to create a email address like submit at whateveryourdomainis.com and after a month of submitting your ads, delete that one and make a new one like submit2 at whateveryourdomainis.com. Next month, repeat the process. So then you have actually created a problem for the ones spamming you. In order to stop all the bounce backs, they will have to edit their lists. It may not be a major task, but even if you cause the spammer a moments aggravation, you’ve succeeded.

They also usually say that when sending the money back to them that you “wire” it to them.

Now if you do all this – deposit the sum of money, smile when you see the large sum of money in your account, and gladly wire them their small ‘fee’, you’ll soon be crying because within a day or two of all this your check will bounce. This will leave you with no money (from your windfall) and will leave you stuck losing the money you wired them, since you can’t get this money back. (why do you think they said ‘wire’ them the money?)

So what can one do?

  • only accept checks from people you know, or from banks that are local so you can go and check on it personally
  • after depositing a check, wait til the bank does their thing and the check “clears”. Then things should be fine.
  • if you get an offer that gives you money — only if you pay them a fee, throw it out – it is a scam.
  • don’t dabble in foreign lotteries or prize schemes. In addition to costing you money it may be illegal.
  • never “wire” money to strangers
  • never be in a rush. If someone insists on you acting immediately, you need to become wary. Usually within a few days the bank transactions will be complete and you’ll know for sure if things are on the up and up or not.
  • remember if it seems to good to be true – it probably is.

Spam method number three and it’s cure:

Do you have an article directory? Spammers love this method too. But not in the submitting of articles. No, actually what they do is make multiple drafts of a particular article, stuff them with key words and url’s, then leave them in draft form where they are actually picked up by search engines. Of my three article directories, my general directory was plagued by this. When I figured out what they were doing, there was over 5,000 drafts in my database. The solution I’ve found is to disable drafts on your directory

Secure your email

posted by admin
Nov 15

With Internet fraud on the increase it is becoming increasingly important to protect yourself and your personal details. One slip up can cause sufficient damage to mess up your day and possibly cost you dearly. One thing you should do for a start is to protect your passwords.

Speak to anyone involved in the Internet security industry and they will tell you it is very important to have different passwords for every major account you log into. Obvious, right? Well yes, it is, and companies try to “help” by forcing you to pick a strong password, or even providing one for you. That’s great, right?

Well no, not really. Think of it this way. You have an email account which you access every day, often from multiple locations. It stands to reason that you log into your email account more than all your other accounts. The more you use it the more vulnerable it is.

You may think that last statement is not accurate, that your password is strong and nobody can know it. You might be right, but the first time you need to use a public computer to access your email, can you be sure there isn’t a keylogger on the computer you are using? Can you be sure their systems are secure so there isn’t someone sniffing your password?

This all sounds a little far fetched, and indeed it is rare, but it does happen. Every day there are many people whose email accounts get compromised. It is the most popular type of account to hack.

The main reason email accounts are hacked is to use these accounts for spam, but the other reason they are hacked is they contain all sorts of account data.

However, this is often not your fault. You sign up using their registration form, enter your secure password and wait for an email from them. You check your email and there is your username and password as a “helpful reminder” in plain text!

If a hacker manages to hack your email account they now have access to your email, as well as the other account you have signed up for. If you happen to use the same password for other accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Bank!) then they may try to gain access to those too.

This is a big problem, and as individuals we can try to stem it by deleting these emails (from the trash too!), but the real issue is companies sending them out in the first place.

As a final word of advice, try to keep to these following rules:

  • Keep your email password as secure as possible (letters + numbers etc)
  • Use different passwords for all accounts (not even similar)
  • Change your main email password every now and then
  • Delete emails with passwords in them (and empty the trash)
  • Never trust a public computer. If you must use one, change your password asap
  • Never use any common passwords

Internet Safety

With today’s internet risky and potentially dangerous worms, trojans and dialers, an online spyware remover is a must-have. What exactly is spyware, and why do you need protection from it?

Hackers could also use your passwords to host their own websites under your name without you even knowing it. I have heard of cases where people were hosting porn and illegal sites without their knowledge. ID theft is also fairly common.

It is your responsibility to protect yourself and your business by making sure that you use an anti virus software, a firewall and anti spy ware and make sure that you update it regularly. There are 500 new viruses created each day, so make sure you stay on top of things.

Each piece of paper comes with its own little “robot” which is invisible to you and continues to record everything else you do in the store as you stroll (surf the the internet). Then, after gathering all of this secret and private information from you – without you even knowing it – the “robot” then tries to persuade you to buy things – sometimes it shouts suggestions in your ears, other times it makes advertisements to guide you back to its department. The most dangerous robots grab your feet and violently drag you back to their department, in the hopes you’ll buy something. If you try to fight it, the robot pushes back even harder, and move slowly, or even stop moving!

Invisus.com is a good site to visit for a wealth of information on this subject. They also have a free tool that you can use to run a check on your computer.

In short, to maximize your computer security:

• Protect your personal information – It’s valuable.
• Know who you are dealing with online.
• Use strong passwords that can’t be guessed easily. Don’t use your date of birth for example.
• Update your operating system and web browser software on a regular basis.
• Backup all your important files.
• And finally, make sure that you protect your children online.

Even better, you should prevent adware and spyware from infecting your computer – kind of like having a big friend to follow you around in the store, fighting off the robots. This prevention software, which is usually part of a firewall of similar can save you a lot of headaches.

But, if you think your computer may be infected with spyware or adware – then shop around for the very best online spyware remover you can find. Sure, there are free removers available, and they can do a good job. But, they’re limited in what they can do, and none will prevent an attack

I guess you have been in a situation where you are convinced to buy certain goods but regretted later when you’ve got home. I have. I usually categorize that kind of marketing as high pressure psychological selling, because the salesman usually applies high level of psychological pressure on the prospect to finally succeed in selling the goods. Malwares and computer viruses are widely implementing these psychological tension practices in their ways of spreading and contagion. Such techniques implements but not limited to the exploitation of human basic psychologies: Curiosity, Greed, and Fear. How do we tell that a trojan or a worm virus is trying to get into our system using a psychological pressure? Following are some precautions to help us tell just prior to their attempts to compromise our system: 1. Is it forcing us to run or download something, for fear of something such as getting our computer infected by a trojan, computer virus or worm? If it is while it’s not at all the active running antivirus software we have installed, we can say that it is definitely a virus, malware, or even a worm. 2. Is it offering some software solution that looks like it’s too good to be true and free at the same time? At times, it can be just a marketing hype, but it’s a best practice to beware about the urge to download or agreeing on something it is offering. Downloading a program or just opening a page containing java script or flash application would be enough to get our computer compromised by a computer virus, malware, or trojan. 3. Are we aware of the brands (if any)? Is it a rather famous antivirus brand, or just some very popular one, but not an antivirus? Sometimes they ride with popular brands to fool the less cautious. Do you remember the “XP Antivirus 2008″ virus disguising Antivirus Software Downloads? Its high success rate really was boosted by the “XP” brand, riding on Windows XP’s brand. Lately, a brand new release of the virus is already spreading, one that we know as “XP Antivirus 2009″. 4. Always best to double-check weather the URL or domain name we type is right to make sure it is safe. You have to do this if you wish not to unwantingly enter a phishing site, in which case is a much worse scenario compared to contracting a virus. A rogue site is an latest psychological scam in that it tricked visitors into thinking that it’s the right site they’re searching to visit. Everything they have on the page would in turn then be taken for granted by unsuspecting visitors. 5. If you are uncertain of those that I have mentioned, talk to a friend that knows more about this matter. There should be at the very least something certain about it, like a popular brand name of antivirus or computer security software solution, the exact URL or at least domain name of the target site, what should be classified into being too good to be true and what not. The success rate this way of contagion has is surprisingly high, assuming the wide availability of legitimate computer security software and antivirus or Internet Security Software available in the market. This is why I always urge everyone that asked for my opinion on computer security to continuously learn about it, even for just a small bit of knowledge. As only with knowledge even for just a little, can we actually pertain in the safe environment against malicious software.

Computer Security Tutorial - Patch Windows using Panda Security Online Scan

This question arises as a new trend in online scan service provided by antivirus software and computer security solution vendors are trending. Are we supposed to use this thing? This question triggers many other questions along, such as:

- Do we need to make use of a free virus scan? At times you need to be sure that your system id free of malware whatsoever, or if a rogue antivirus that can fool you is actually hiding just behind the currently running antivirus. We can take advantage of the always-up-to-date state of an online free virus scan database, in case it can detect an otherwise undetectable virus, due to its state of update and possible different algorithm used.

- Is an online free virus scan really effective? Although this depends on the state of update of the database being used, chances are that an online scan tends to use the latest virus definition database. The fact that’s possible is that it implements the latest technologies in scanning. Regardless of that, not knowing the previous condition that the system is in can lead to uselessness of the scan, if for instance the system is already compromised by a virus.

What will it do? The usual procedure that an online free virus scan follows is: (1) download; (2) install; (3) update; (4) scan. The procedure sequence resembles a typical program installation steps of any regular free antivirus software. But it actually differs in that what it installs is only the scanner portion and not the whole antivirus program. After the scan is complete, should any infections be detected, some online scan service will try to disinfect right away, while some will only notify us about this findings and suggest on running a more comprehensive antivirus scan instead, to completely remove any existence of malware.

- In what circumstances should we implement an online virus scan? As soon as we have time to do it, or at least each time we’ve taken some risk of having acquired files that’s probably infected by a virus, trojan or worm. The running antivirrus software may remain calm but every other virus scan may find something unusual instead.

- What’s in a free virus scan that’s not there in our regular antivirus software? That is the varying services of each vendors; the capability of scanning on the fly; and also the vast availability. Not counting that, I think there is none.

- How effective is it? If we are to use this service as a preventive measure, the ineffectiveness is obvious. This is really a best choice for systems without any antivirus installed. Obviously, I admit that I’m one of that kind of users. Needless to say I need to scan my files and folders for viruses if there has been an infection.

In the end, what should we decide?

The final choice is definitely up to you. To me, for the readiness upon request and minimum installation requirements, an Online Free Virus Scan is rather effective, being a virtual system user as I am. Although I think I would prefer to use antivirus software if the choice of a virtualization is not available. (I currently insist on using a clean system, without any antivirus software installed. It’s LIGHT :) , and preserves the world)

How Does CAPTCHA Work?

posted by admin
Sep 11

Suppose you are about to use the online service to buy tickets and want to find out when and who are playing at a local stadium. When you are about to order, you have to first fill in a query. It is an easy one. In fact, it’s all about how simple it is. Because you are a human, the query should be plain and simple. A different story for a computer, the simple question would be mostly impossible to do.

This test is what we usually have known as CAPTCHA. The acronym actually stands for Completely Automated Public Turing Test. It is there to prevent computer-automated user from getting through. Another term for that is a kind of Human Interaction Proof or HIP. Sure by now you have ondergone lots of CAPTCHA tests on many web forms. A widely used CAPTCHA lately is a bunch of letters but in image form undetectable by computers, and made of scratches, unrecognizable by character recognition software. As a human, you only have to type the correct letters in the series into a field. If what you typed match exactly the ones in the distorted picture, you pass the test, and considered a human.

So you might be asking why does this all have to be there, to know if it is a human or computer? The main problem is because there are many people out there who are trying to trick the system. Exploitation of weaknesses in online systems are more frequently made and perfected by hackers. Although they are probably only a minority of all users on the internet, what they do disturbs almost all of users and web sites. For example, a free dating service might be massively bombarded with an automated account requests from a program. The requests of new accounts could be in a scenario of data farming that can cause harm to millions of people. By implementing CAPTCHA to sort out computer programs, the bad attempts can be vastly reduced.

Although you have the best security tools installed, is your system constantly getting infected by viruses or contracting trojans and worms? Each one of the details in the following list is part of an all-inclusive and easy to apply security system.

You can defend both the system and your computer from almost all threats to your privacy and security, if you have a similar policy or just implement these points.

1. You should get all patches for your Windows OS and keep them always updated. All you need is a working internet connection and you will have an always updated Windows OS without any cost.

2. Find a best antivirus to date and install it. Consult software review for the best antivirus ranking to date. Nowadays, antivirus software solutions are sold at very affordable price; some with limited capablities are even free. Provide internet connection to let the antivirus update itself anytime, and let it run automatically when the computer starts. Most programs can do this automatically by default.

3. Have a firewall installed and configure it well. Either a software or a hardware firewall will do fine, you just need to make sure it is working properly. A router, in case you are using it, usually have a firewall already built in it, so that you just need to set the rules to make it work properly and effectively. Software firewalls are sold at affordable cost, even for free!

4. Don't install or run any program, but test them in different system or computer first to be safe. A virtual machine or a virtual computer can do this tricky job with no cost at all and act as a free virus protection.

5. Backup your files regularly, just in case. A best plan includes a way out of the worst. All you need is only a few DVDs. With a spare large size harddisk, the cost is reduced to zero!

It's clear that it cost very low and even free if you want to protect yourself from threats.

Security Issues for Small Business Networks

System Security 2009 is the latest edition to the System Security Rogue anti-spyware family. It is a new version, however it still has the same old purpose, infect your machine, collect private info and try to milk as much money out of you as possible. Therefore I believe it will be in your best interest to remove this highly volatile treat asap. Continue reading below to learn how to conduct a system security removal and remove System Security 2009 right now…

I’m sure you’ve heard the expression ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.’ It is far easier to prevent these insidious infections that to cure them. Protecting oneself against malware is important because at the very least it slows down productivity in the workplace. At worst, it can destroy equipment, requiring extensive repairs and/or replacement which are even more damaging to your bottom line. I’ll share an example from my own experience.

I bought a computer early on in my career and was using a popular antivirus product.
One day I was online and my machine started to run slow, so I tried all of the normal fixes such as clearing the temp files and defragmenting the hard drive, etc. This did not help it run any better. I ran a virus scan and found many instances of malware. After attempting to clean the system, it actually failed to boot. Turns out there were bad sectors on the hard drive. I replaced the hard drive but still was unable to get the system up. After checking every conceivable component, I found that my memory was also bad and was unable to upgrade the BIOS. As you can well guess, I ended up buying a new machine.

Would anyone knowingly welcome intruders onto their site where they can disable, alter and damage content while mining personal and security data for nefarious uses?

Would anyone be interested in making a purchase online if they believed the process to be a detriment to their own personal information security?.

Search and delete other related files

I know the process sounds pretty confusing and believe me if you don’t have the computer expertise, then don’t even bother attempting it as you will do more harm than good. The best way to remove system security 2009 would be to download a proper spyware remover and have it removed automatically. These tools are specially designed to remove these threats and also they are more efficient and reliable at completely removing spyware, Plus you’ll have the added benefits of real-time protection. This way you can surf the net and download in peace, knowing that your PC is protected and you will never get infected be spyware again.

So much of our lives are enveloped in the computer, it just makes sense for online business to make sure they have a crack cyber staff on board to keep things safe.

  • For the individual, the same rules apply. You can invite security issues through email, site visits and various software downloads. A home security system for your computer is essential to the long-term health of the World Wide Web.
